Elections take 2!

As part of our elections topic Whaea Ata thought it would be a great idea for us to create our own political parties. Therefore, we had to come up with: a catchy party name, design an awesome banner and think of 4 different ways about how we could improve the NZ schools.

Our work was then presented to Room 12 and they had the opportunity to vote for their favourite party.

The winning party was called Te Puawai - Congratulations Tina, Harold and Paea!

Elections!

Lately Room 8 have noticed a lot of political signs in the community. Today we focussed our discussion on 4 specific political party signs; National,  Labour, Greens and the Maori Party. We talked about what we knew in regards to each party and what they will be doing to support New Zealand schools. There were some interesting responses and now we're thinking who will be our future government?

Fractions with Whaea Danielle

Room 8 always enjoys learning something new. During maths last week we were very lucky to have a fraction lesson from Whaea Danielle. Even though it was the last block of the day, we still tried hard to listen to what was being taught.

We had to really put our 'division and multiplication' caps on and try solve Whaea Danielle's tricky word problems.

The first thing she taught us was 'WHAT IS THE WHOLE' - we had to identify this and make sure that we used the correct vocabulary whenever we answered her questions.

The next thing we learnt was to read the question carefully and indentify 'ANY KEY INFROMATION ABOUT THE PROBLEM' as this would help us to solve it. E.g. any fractions or any numbers left over.

After this we were able to draw the fraction and then, use our knowledge of division to try and solve the problem.

Here's a problem for you to all try:
Don't forget to write how you got your answer.

There was a big group of grumpy cats hiding away under Miss Breen's Maths room. 2/8 of them were tiny tabby kittens all with a black spot on their eye lid. The remaining cats were all giniger, there were 18 of them.

How many cats (including kittens) were there altogether hiding underneath Miss Breen's maths room?

2014 Home School Partnerships Expo!

Throughout this term Room 8 have been learning about inventors and inventions. For our class expo we were all placed into groups and had to research a lot of information about an invention of our choice. This information then had to be displayed onto our research board for our parents and families to see. The inventions we decided to research about were; the light bulb, the projector, the camera, the electric fence, the computer and the air conditioner.

While some of us researched, we also had to create a fun activity for people to play at the expo. Some groups made puzzles, some made quiz's and the best game of all was a basket ball game.

Here are some photo's of us making our research boards, working together and people reading or playing our activities.

99 Championships!

Yesterday Room 8 were given a wonderful opportunity to practice their addition, subtraction and basic multiplication skills in a card game with Room 23.  We got to meet and interact with new students who we may not normally play with at morning tea and lunch time. It was an awesome Maths activity and hopefully we will have a competition against other classes.

Commonwealth Games!

At the beginning of this term room 8 learnt about the Commonwealth Games for Topic. A research activity that we completed in pairs was to find information about a Commonwealth games sport and an athlete from New Zealand who competed in that sport. We found out a lot interesting information about our athletes like; how old they were, where they were born and how many medals they had won in their life time. Once we had collected all of our information we had to neatly display it all on an A3 piece of paper, like a poster. Once we had all finished our posters Whaea Ata marked them and the winners were given a prize. The pair that neatly displayed the best amount of information was Gemini and Ripeka. Unfortunately, Ripeka was absent when this photo was taken but she still won a prize as well. She also presented her work to Mrs Dawson. An excellent effort Gemini and Ripeka, you both worked really hard!
