Fractions with Whaea Danielle

Room 8 always enjoys learning something new. During maths last week we were very lucky to have a fraction lesson from Whaea Danielle. Even though it was the last block of the day, we still tried hard to listen to what was being taught.

We had to really put our 'division and multiplication' caps on and try solve Whaea Danielle's tricky word problems.

The first thing she taught us was 'WHAT IS THE WHOLE' - we had to identify this and make sure that we used the correct vocabulary whenever we answered her questions.

The next thing we learnt was to read the question carefully and indentify 'ANY KEY INFROMATION ABOUT THE PROBLEM' as this would help us to solve it. E.g. any fractions or any numbers left over.

After this we were able to draw the fraction and then, use our knowledge of division to try and solve the problem.

Here's a problem for you to all try:
Don't forget to write how you got your answer.

There was a big group of grumpy cats hiding away under Miss Breen's Maths room. 2/8 of them were tiny tabby kittens all with a black spot on their eye lid. The remaining cats were all giniger, there were 18 of them.

How many cats (including kittens) were there altogether hiding underneath Miss Breen's maths room?

  1. Thank you Room 8 I really enjoyed working in your classroom and sharing and discussing our strategies for solving word story problems that involve fractions. Some of you were able to demonstrate some great stage 7 thinking! Keep up the great work :)

  2. Yay it's so exciting to see lots of Maths happening in our school. I love fractions, I hope my students from term 1 and 2 were thinking really hard and sharing their ideas like I know they can. Keep up the good work room 8 and Whaea Ata :-)
